Ultimately though good sustain and transfer etc is down to the quality of the joint rather than the type. I've had a few Jap les Pauls with stumpy neck tenons and they were highly resonant and sustained forever..great quality workmanship though.

The Epiphone Elitist LP has the long neck tenon. Since it is deeper into the body's thickness than the depth of the pickups, it adds a fair amount of strength. From a construction standpoint, it adds stability to the neck joint (Gibson's intention), but many people attribute it to longer sustain due to the fact that there is more wood/wood-to-wood conctact, which adds mass, which according to Gibson improves sustain.
